Microsoft announces Surface Laptop with Windows 10 S starting at $999

At the MicrosoftEDU event in New York City, the company announced a brand new addition to the Surface lineup called the ‘Surface Laptop’. The new machine was leaked earlier today and is aimed at students running on Microsoft’s new Windows 10 S operating system.
The new Surface Laptop is made out of plastic, metal and fabric, just like the Surface 4 Pro keyboard. It looks gorgeous and Microsoft has put a lot of attention to detail. It comes with a 13.5-inch display having a 3:2 aspect ratio which has kind of become a Microsoft standard. That display is also claimed to be the thinnest LCD touch model ever created and put into a laptop offering 3.4 million pixels. It also supports Microsoft’s Surface Pen, so you can draw or write notes on it.

The Surface Laptop is basically an ultrabook to launch the Windows 10 S platform. But it’s not cheap. The Core i5 base variant with 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB storage starts at $999. It must be noted that we’ve find 4 GB of RAM to be rather low for a Windows device. However, it’s possible that Windows 10 S is simpler and lighter than regular Windows 10, making the amount of RAM more palatable. That said, the MacBook Air is cheaper and offers more RAM, albeit at the cost of screen resolution and rated battery life.
Now this doesn’t make it a Chromebook competitor, rather a really good looking Windows laptop that is functional and takes on Apple’s MacBooks. While Windows 10 S will be a bit of a spoiler since you cannot install any third-party software, Microsoft will give an option to upgrade to Windows 10 pro.
Other features of the Surface Laptop include a claimed battery life of 14.5 hours, which is ‘beyond any MacBook’ on the market. It will be offered in four colors; platinum, burgundy, cobalt blue, and graphite gold. The laptop is configurable to up to a Core i7 CPU with a 1 TB PCIe-based integrated SSD. Microsoft has also built the speakers in a very unique way as they reside under the keyboard and sound comes out around the keys and through the fiber material.
