Mumbai-based Indus OS, which makes regional operating systems, has gone past Apple and Microsoft when it comes to the most used smartphone operating systems
market in India. It is second only to Android OS in India.
According a data from Counterpoint research shared by Economic Times, Android OS leads the market with 83.8 percent share, followed by Indus OS with 5.6 percent share which is higher than Apple’s iOS at 2.5 percent and Microsoft Windows at 0.7 percent.
Indus OS is adding close to half a million activations every month and the company expects to double these numbers in the next six months, said CEO Rakesh Deshmukh to ET. The company has set a target of 100 million users by 2018.
The Indus OS is seen on Micromax smartphones and is available on 25 phone models. Indus OS is present on 1.4 million of the 24.8 million Android OS sporting smartphones that were sold in the first quarter says the report.
At the third position is Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi’s MIUI OS with a 4.1 percent market share whereas at no. 4 with a 2.8 percent share there is the Cyanogen OS which is seen on Micromax subsidiary YU Televentures’ handsets.
Indus OS has patented 12 regional keyboards and they can also translate messages written in a local language to English with a left swipe. Or transliterate by right swiping the message.
