OnePlus will combine OxygenOS and HydrogenOS to deliver faster updates to their users

Yes, love it or hate it, OnePlus will be combining its two ROMs used in its smartphones to build a single mobile operating system.

XDA got in touch with OnePlus and conducted an interview in which OnePlus’ revealed its plans to combine the two operating systems into what OnePlus currently calls the Community Build 3.5.1.

The ROM is currently available for download and installation, but you can expect it to be buggy. OnePlus, for now, has not decided on what would be the official name of the new ROM, but it has told XDA why it plans to do the same.

Speedy updates would be the sole explanation from OnePlus. Currently, the company has two operating systems to support. OxygenOS, which is an almost stock looking OS, caters to international users of its smartphones, while HydrogenOS is a heavily customised version of the same that is available for users in China. But with two ROMs to support, there is always a bit of delay which results in late updates for OnePlus smartphone owners.

The simple solution was to combine the two OSes meaning both teams working on the software will now work as one and this, according to OnePlus, would let the company deliver updates a lot faster.

“The main benefit of combining our team resources is to speed up software updates. We know we have some room to continue improving there, and this is an important step in the right direction,” a company official told XDA.

While this benefits the company and the users, we aren’t too sure what the results will look like. The HydrogenOS was built keeping the tastes of Chinese users in mind, who often prefer a heavily skinned versions of Android. Internationally, OnePlus offers something unique that could even be called a Google Nexus-like experience with an almost stock-looking UI.

While there is no date as to when the final release of this new combination will arrive, let’s just hope that users who have paid to experience a stock and simple UI have an option to keep things that way.

The Community Builds which were recently introduced by OnePlus makes for a great way for OnePlus to gain inputs from its customers about ROMs that are currently a work in progress.
