Samsung launched its highly anticipated flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S8 as well as the larger S8+ in India last week. I had a chance to use the devices for sometime and I was quite impressed. You got to give it to Samsung for how it has managed to evolve its curved-edge design over the past two years.
The new infinity display looks gorgeous. The super slim bezel on the top and bottom allowed Samsung to use a 5.8-inch display and a 6.2-inch display efficiently, without having to compromise on the overall dimension of the handsets. And considering its a Super AMOLED with a 2K resolution, it looks vivid and vibrant.
Now since there is glass on the front and the back, both S8 and the S8+ have a super glossy finish. While they do offer a sizable amount of grip, the question that comes to my mind is, is that enough? What if you accidentally drop it? What if you knock it off your desk
Dropping a smartphone flat on the floor is a nightmare. But that fear just cranks up when the display is as sophisticated as on the Galaxy S8. I remember my friend using a Galaxy S7 Edge somehow dropped it from about half a meter. The outer glass didn’t have a scratch, but the display panel underneath cracked and I could see a sliver of colour distortion. He had to pay over Rs 15,000 as a replacement.
I raised my concern around shattering the Galaxy S8 to Samsung to which Asim Warsi, Chief of Marketing and Product at Samsung Mobile India, said “Dont drop it.” A sound advice, but not convincing enough.
He went on to say that the handset has toughened Gorilla Glass 5 on the front as well as the back. Both the glass panels have been reinforced with the metal frame in between offering a solid build. Apart from that, he said that the company will be bringing in some cases for the smartphone for extra protection. Now why would you put such an elegant looking smartphone inside a case?
Samsung is not offering any protection plans either. I was really hoping that a one time free replacement will be on the cards. Even a small fee for the replacement service would have sufficed.
